The US minted the 2008 silver eagle with no mint mark and also the 2008 W burnished silver eagle and 2008 W proof silver eagle. The mint mark, when present, can be found on the reverse side of the coin.

The burnished silver eagles have a unique look to them. Burnished coins have a matte-like finish and they appear less shiny.

Proof coins are essentially coins that have more detail. They are minted on special planchets and it takes longer to produce them. Each proof coin originally comes in a US Mint issued velvet box and a certificate of authorization (COA).

Error Coins

There is an error variety for the 2008 W burnished silver eagles and it's an easy error to spot. On the back of these error coins you will find the reverse of the 2007 silver eagle series. The reverse dies of 2007 and earlier years have a plain letter "U" in the word United. Starting in 2008 the modified dies have a letter "U" with a small serif.

The 2008 W burnished silver eagle with the reverse of 2007 is worth around $600 in uncirculated condition. There were estimated to be 47,000 of these coins minted.
