Designs
As mentioned there are two different design varieties. The designs show two different aspects of Benjamin Franklin's life. One design features Franklin as a founding father, and the other design features Franklin as a scientist.
Each design has a similar mintage and no one design is more valuable than the other.
Founding Father
The obverse side of the coin features a portrait of Benjamin Franklin. On the reverse side of the coin the design features a depiction of the 1776 Continental Currency dollar coin which Franklin designed.
Scientist
The obverse side of the coin features Benjamin Franklin testing out his kite and key experiment. This experiment led to Franklin's invention of the lightening rod. On the reverse side of the coin the design features Franklin's 1754 cartoon called 'Join, or Die'. The cartoon features a snake separated into eighths with the initials of the American colonies or regions. This cartoon is believed to be the first ever political cartoon in American history.
